THE SHORT ANSWER

Prepare heat at both homes and workplaces, keep the heat source supplied, and secure food and replacement materials before winter. A heater that runs out of fuel is not reliable coverage.

Based on the sources below. Planning suggestions are editorial guidance; this is not a claim of hands-on testing on the latest build.

Start with the places Whiskers actually use

Use the heat overlay to inspect residential areas and active workplaces. Treat an isolated worksite as its own heating problem rather than assuming the central settlement covers it. The cold can reduce productivity just when the colony needs dependable supplies.

  • Inspect homes and regularly used workplaces.
  • Check exposed travel and service areas.
  • Confirm the heat source is still operating after a work cycle.

Match the fuel plan to the heater

Early heat and later steam heating have different dependencies. Campfires are temporary and require attention; more organized heating depends on its supply arrangements. For a steam system, trace the whole chain from water and boiler fuel to the radiator.

Protect the colony's supply chain

Our suggested autumn review is to inspect food, fuel, Machinery and the goods reserved for taxes separately. A large total inventory is not useful if it is mostly a material you cannot consume or trade for the current need.

  • Keep food gathering and delivery staffed.
  • Check that Machinery-consuming buildings can be maintained.
  • Do not treat an absence of winter tax visits as cancelled debt.

Respond to a cold-weather slowdown

If production drops, first inspect worker temperature and the building's own status. Restore the missing supply or heating coverage, then observe the result before expanding. Use current in-game conditions to judge your buffer; this guide does not prescribe a universal stockpile size.
