THE SHORT ANSWER

A working steam network needs boiler water, delivered fuel, a connected steam route and enough stored supply. Trace those dependencies before adding more engines or radiators.

Based on the sources below. Planning suggestions are editorial guidance; this is not a claim of hands-on testing on the latest build.

Get one boiler operating first

A Steam Boiler consumes water and fuel. A nearby Fire Tender supplies fuel, so inspect that delivery arrangement as well as the water line. Observe actual steam generation before building a large network around an untested boiler.

Connect the correct pipe system

Steam Pipe and Water Pipe are distinct and cannot occupy the same space. Follow the boiler's steam outlet to the intended consumer, checking vertical transitions. Provide the supports required by elevated pipe segments.

  • Verify water reaches the boiler.
  • Check fuel is present and replenished.
  • Trace a continuous Steam Pipe route.
  • Inspect the consumer's connection and supply.

Buffer demand before adding engines

Steam production and consumption can happen in bursts. Storage helps cover the gap. Engines increase demand while their connected buildings operate, so assess the network under real production load rather than when factories are idle.

Replace heat in stages

Our suggested migration is to connect and verify one radiator area before removing its previous heat source. Keep boiler fuel delivery working even after retiring tenders that only served old local heaters. Check water and steam reserves through an evening cycle, then expand the next section.
