Build and staff a Farm, then designate fields with the Farm tool. If crops stall, inspect temperature, sunlight and ground conditions before expanding the field.
Based on the sources below. Planning suggestions are editorial guidance; this is not a claim of hands-on testing on the latest build.
A Farm building is not a planted field
The building supplies workers; the Farm tool defines the crop area. Place fields within working range and choose the intended crop. Establish farming before it becomes your only remaining food source, because the first harvest takes time.
Read the field instead of guessing
Several conditions can limit farming, and adding more tiles may repeat the same problem. Inspect a struggling field with the tool and note which condition is poor.
- Temperature: check whether the crop is too cold.
- Light: look for buildings or walkways blocking the sky.
- Ground: review nutrients, rocks and pollution.
- Workers: confirm the field is reachable and staffed.
Treat mushrooms differently
Mushrooms prefer dark growing areas rather than ordinary exposed farmland. They still need appropriate warmth and low pollution. Do not apply a sunny field layout to an underground mushroom crop, or assume that darkness alone makes the site suitable.
Restore output before chasing a perfect layout
Fallow periods allow nutrient recovery, while fertilizer is a later option. Our suggested approach is to test a manageable field and observe planting and harvest work before scaling it. Official wiki pages differ on field subdivision advice, so this guide does not prescribe a universal plot size. Compare actual worker idle time and harvest backlog in your save.
